With its original passive solar house dating back to the mid 1960’s, this property’s existing conditions combined a Mid-Century Modern architecture aesthetic will a mature and overgrown woodland landscape. Working with the client, this project developed fresh concepts for how to transform the overgrown and shaded front, interior area, and side buffer areas of their property into a unified designed landscape.
This project required extensive research to select deer tolerant, shade tolerant, native plant material to provide year round interest and a palette that would thrive in the unique conditions of this site. Designing also required an equal effort of adding new plants cohesively and editing, trimming, and removing existing plants. This approach resulted in a cleaned up woodland with five focus planting areas that tie the landscape together into a suburban woodland with both curb appeal and high ecological value.

A plant palette including sporobolus, schizacharyium, and eragrostis infills the expansive mulched front yard. Lavender adds pollinator benefit and rhododendron frame and define the home’s facade. Stepping stones meander through the central massing of ornamental grasses, creating an element of everyday play.
